Adding insulation is a part of almost every home retrofit project. Installing spray foam insulation as a barrier between the home and the outside enviroment is one of the most important ways to improve the efficiency of any home.

Creating an ‘air-tight’ building through the installation of spray foam insulation is the fastest way to reduce energy consumption, improve indoor air quality, and maintain a comfortable indoor environment. The Thames Home Renewables Retrofit Program simplifies the weather proofing process for homeowners by creating one point of contact to rely on when beginning a home energy evaluation and upgrade project.

It is always recommended to first perform a home energy survey when considering making home efficiency upgrades. An energy survey will help pin point areas of your home that need to be upgraded to allow for better home energy performance. During the audit, your Thames Home Renewables Energy Surveyor will perform an on site interview and inspection.

Homeowners are encouraged to make a list of existing problems such as uncomfortable areas, condensation issues or any other areas of concern It is also recommended to provide copies of your home’s yearly utility bills. Surveyors use this information to establish benchmarks during the home energy evaluation process.

Vented and non-vented attic spaces

Foam Insulation can be used in two common ways to insulate your attic space and protect your home from inclement weather and moisture related damages.

Poorly insulated home (vented attic)

Damp and mould (bad storage area)

In a vented attic, insulation is used on the attic floor to insulate the living space from seasonal temperatures.

Thames Home Renewables insulated home (unvented attic)

Guaranteed for 25 years, no damp, mould or condensation (perfect storage area)

In a non-vented attic, insulation is applied directly to the underside of the roof sheathing to insulate the entire attic from seasonal heat and/ or cold. Spray foam is installed between the roof rafters, along the soffit areas and directly to all exterior surfaces such as gable walls and dormers to produce an air tight building envelope.

Spray foam is used where traditional insulation would be; between the floor joists. The rest of the attic (ie: the roof assembly) is left uninsulated and ventilation is incorporated into the gable, soffit, and ridge vents throughout the roof structure.

Air barrier and
air sealing

In order to design and build safe, healthy, portable and economical buildings, airflow must be controlled.

Uncontrolled airflow carries moisture that impacts a materials long-term performance (serviceability), structural integrity (durability), indoor air quality (distribution of pollutants and location of microbial reservoirs) and thermal energy performance. One of the key strategies in the control of airflow is the use of air barriers.

Air barriers are intended to resist the air pressure variations that act on them. Spray foam systems can serve as a successful air barrier, internally applied within cavity systems at the proper thickness. Air barrier systems keep outside air out of the building enclosure or inside air from escaping the building enclosure depending on climate or configuration. Sometimes air barrier systems do both. Air barriers can be located anywhere in the building envelope.

In cold climates, interior air barriers control the exfiltration of interior, often moisture-laden air. Whereas exterior air barrier systems control the infiltration of exterior air and prevent wind-washing through cavity insulation systems.

Airflow through cracks and holes in the walls, ceiling and floor is referred to as air infiltration. In addition to the use of spray foam, air infiltration is minimized by caulking and sealing the building envelope. A home that is not sealed for air in-filtration will be uncomfortable due to drafts.

Thermal imaging

An effective way to determine the heat loss or gain in a building envelope is by using thermal imaging photography.

Thermal imaging identifies leaks where air may be entering or exiting a building by displaying warmer areas with a distinct RED colour, as it stands out against cooler areas.
